The GSS has entered into a Memorandum of Agreement with the Southeastern Cave Conservancy, Inc.<\/a> (SCCi) to resurvey Frick’s Cave in Walker County, Georgia. The project started in December, 2001 and as of the last survey trip in September 2007, the cave has been surveyed to 13,982 feet traverse (2.65 miles). A map of the progress thus far was published by the GSS in 2009. Survey of the cave is currently suspended to prevent the spread of White Nose Syndrome by cavers to the 10,000 endangered gray bats that inhabit the cave.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Please note that Frick\u2019s Cave is normally closed to recreational caving and requires a permit from the SCCi for other purposes to protect 10,000 endangered gray bats that inhabit the cave. The SCCi typically hosts an annual open house in late winter for recreation purposes when the gray bats are not present. Because of the threat of White Nose Syndrome to the bats, all survey trips and open houses have been suspended.<\/p>\n<\/div>

The Memorandum of Agreement<\/a> between the Southeastern Cave Conservancy and Georgia Speleological Survey contains specific project guidelines, survey standards, and the project timetable. More information on the project is contained in the letter<\/a> sent to all GSS members sent out in November, 2001. Information for Frick’s Cave Resurvey Project Participants<\/a> is handed out to participants at the beginning of each trip to help explain rules and survey standards.<\/p>\n<\/div>
